The beauty of reading books is changing as we know it. Reading a good book does so many things; let's dig in, shall we?
Reading books can take you to another place and time. You can learn new or old things depending on what you're reading. Reading books can inspire you. Reading books can change your perspectives. Reading books can take you away from what's happening in your life for an hour or two or more if you're an avid reader. Reading books can influence you to try new things, and the list can go on. So I dare to repeat it the beauty of reading books is changing as we know it.
There used to be a time when going to the library to check out a book; most books were hardback. Sometimes the books would have a thin layer of plastic covering, so there is a slight crackling sound as it's opened. There was a little pocket in the front of the book with a card from the card catalog (during this time, computers weren't quite a thing yet). The card would list the day the book had to be returned. The smell of bark would come to mind when I opened a book, and the book always seemed to have been new, as if I were the first to have read it. By the way, I just dropped a clue of my age range. No matter how many people had the opportunity to venture into a particular fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, thriller, romance, geographic, or anything else your heart desired. It used to be an experience to walk into the grand lobby of the library in search of a new adventure in a book. Inside the library, the walls and shelves were covered in books.
I would ride the bus on the weekend to go to Enoch Pratt library. I used to look forward to going alone to sit, read and dream. The beauty of books has evolved to the beauty of audiobooks. Now you can "read" and learn, or shall I say listen and learn on the go, and you don't even have to venture to the library to get it. Just a few clicks of a button, and you are off to another place in a matter of minutes. Talk about microwave generation. Audiobooks are great, but there is something about picking up a book, smelling the pages, and flipping the pages to enter into a new chapter, a new day and time, if only for a little while. We are in a new chapter, the chapter of audiobooks.
